  • You are standing outside of a room with no windows. The room has three light bulbs and three switches outside of a room. Each switch controls one of the light bulbs. You may only enter the room one time. How can you find what switch goes to each light bulb?
Switch on switch one and two. Turn off switch one after 5 minutes. Enter the room and you will find that the lit bulb is wired to switch two. Touch the other two bulbs. The bulb which is hot is wired to switch one while the other is wired to switch three.
  • You need to measure out four gallons but you only have a three-gallon jug and a five-gallon jug. How do you measure out four gallons exactly?
Fill the three-gallon jar and pour the water into the five-gallon jar. The five-gallon jar now has 3 gallons of water in it. Fill the three-gallon jar again and pour the water into the five-gallon jar. Now the five-gallon jar will be full and the three-gallon jar will have 1 gallon of water remaining in it. Empty out the five-gallon jar and pour the remaining 1 gallon of water from the three gallon jar into this. Now fill the three-gallon jar and you will have exactly 4 gallons of water in both jars.
  • A mother is as twice as old as her son. If the age of the mother was 10 times the age of her son 20 years ago, what is the present age of the mother?
A. 38 years

B. 40 years

C. 43 years

D. 45 years

Explanation: 

Let x = age of son

Age of mother = 2x

20 years ago: 

Age of son = x - 20

Age of mother = 2x - 20

Given that the age of mother was 10 times the age of son: 

2x - 20 = 10 (x - 20)

2x - 20 = 10x - 200

200 - 20 = 10x - 2x

8x = 180

x = 180/8

x = 22.5

Age of mother = 2 * 22.5 = 45 years old

  • If March 05, 1964 was Thursday, what day of the week was March 05, 1965?
